Who else’s pre-isolation hobbies largely revolve around eating out, because mine certainly do. I keep finding myself desperately craving my favourite Italian restaurant, because who doesn’t love a gigantic bowl of comforting, carby goodness? Although I promptly set to work attempting to recreate some of my favourite pasta dishes early on into the lockdown, I haven’t been able to replicate the same authentic, deliciousness. Naturally.
Cue Pasta Evangelists.
Pasta Evangelists is a name that I have been aware of for quite sometime, after I noticed their mouthwatering pasta dishes starting to pop up all over my Instagram feed. Then, after a rather sleepless night loosing myself down an Instagram black hole, I started digging a little deeper about this revered name in the foodie world and realised that I could get these dishes delivered to my door too; it was a no-brainer for me. I made my purchase and waited rather patiently/impatiently for it to arrive. Finally, the delivery arrived and it took all of my will power not to march into the kitchen that instant and begin cooking.
Who are they?
Pasta Evangelists are a small team of pasta enthusiasts based in London, founded in 2016 by Alessandro Savelli. Since then, they have evolved and have been delivering traditional handmade pasta straight to your front door using only the highest quality ingredients sourced, entirely from farmers and growers in Italy. Priding themselves on offering authentic Italian cooking, their menu offers a range of pasta shapes and dishes from across all regions of Italy bringing a true slice of Italy to your front door.
How does it work?
Every week their chefs offer up 10 indulgent and varied dishes for you to choose from (including vegetarian and vegan options). When you have made your selection you simply choose what day you want it to be delivered and just wait for it to be shipped out to you. Your pasta then comes safely packaged within insulated material alongside ice packs to ensure it remains fresh throughout the process. Your meals are colour coded and come with a handy recipe booklet, that not only tells you how to prepare your food but gives you information about the dish and its origins. I think this is a really nice touch and provides a refreshing, delicious and educational way to enjoy good Italian food, all from the comfort of your own home. Pasta Evangelists offer subscription packages as well as one off orders, so it is really versatile depending on your needs.
What did I order?
First was, Strozzapreti with Pistachio Pesto from Sicily. This was a wonderful dish that transported me back to the beautiful Sicilian coast, where my mum and I enjoyed a similar dish two summers ago. The pesto was really tasty, and the Pistachios gave it a beautifully vibrant green hue that made it all the more appealing. The Pistachio nut garnish really enhanced the flavour of the pesto with rich, nutty notes and gave it a delightful texture. But my favourite was the Spring Lamb Ragú with Fresh Paccheri Pasta. Who doesn’t love a Ragú? It’s a wonderfully comforting dish and this one really was perfect. The tender lamb held its incredible flavour for a really rich and flavoursome sauce coupled with lashings of grated Italian cheese. I was truly in my element.
How long does it take to prepare?
These dishes were literally ready in less than 10 minutes, so they are ideal for a quick, tasty meal at the end of a busy day when you are short for time.
Do you need any extra ingredients?
No! Everything you need, ranging from the freshly made pasta, indulgent sauces, delightful garnishes and grated cheese are all delivered straight to your door. Obviously, if you want to add a side or accompaniment to the dish then you will need to add these to your shopping list in preparation for your delivery.
Is it worth the money?
I have a really large appetite, so I was a little concerned that I would still find myself hungry, but the portion sizes are quite generous and I did find myself happily full after eating. I could definitely have eaten more, but I think that is just me and my greediness rather than a problem with the portion size. I did find myself drawing comparisons between Pasta Evangelist‘s and my favourite independent Italian Restaurant and I was not disappointed. Firstly, the cost and portion size were generally on par, but, Pasta Evangelists offer some, more unique pasta dishes than those on offer in my favourite restaurant, like the Stozzapreti with Pistachio Pesto. Taking this into account, as well as the recipe cards and the easy preparation then I really do think that it is worth the money spent.
What else do I need to know?
Aside from being truly scrumptious, the pasta and sauces can conveniently be frozen (on the day of delivery) for up to one month; meaning that delicious dinners are never too far away. I froze the Spring Lamb Ragú as per the instructions and didn’t have any problems with the sauce or pasta when I came to use them the following week – just read the instructions carefully!
Would I order again?
The simple answer is yes and I already have! Twice! However, despite finding these recipes incredibly delicious and easy to prepare, it is something that could become quite pricey quite quickly if you become a regular subscriber. Overall, their food is excellent and you really do get a sense of the care and craftsmanship that they put into the food they are creating. The convenience of these meals being delivered straight to your door, and ready to eat in minutes makes a really delightful service to land on your doorstep. The fresh pasta also feels like an indulgent treat after years of eating dried pasta at home.
I also need to mention how lovely and helpful their customer service department were; they kept me updated on the progress of the order, including a delay in the shipment because of Covid-19. They offered discount codes and credit to my account which was a lovely touch considering the circumstances were beyond their control. Overall, a wonderful experience from start to finish!
